Technology evolves at such a rapid pace that it can often feel like it’s difficult to keep up. Today I’ll be talking about an application called Pokemon Go that is busy going viral around the world. The application has been downloaded so many times that it is now more popular than both Twitter and Tinder.
So what is it about Pokemon Go that has excited users and made the app so popular? It all boils down to something called Augmented Reality, which is a live view of a real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. Or to put it more simply, it’s looking at the real world on a screen but with digital bits overlayed.
This type of technology allows users to engage with designed content in reality, which can make it seem as if your mobile device is your third eye into a whole new world. All visuals that you see are created by designers who use a vast amount of computer software programs such as Adobe Photoshop, After Effects and 3D rendering programs.
The designer’s attention to detail is crucial as things need to seem as realistic as possible. There will be more than one type of designer working on producing an application like Pokemon Go. One designer will focus on the user experience of the actual application while others will focus on the actual content that the app produces and portrays.
Designers need to understand the thought process of people using the application and need ask questions like: is the user journey clear enough that all age groups will understand it? As it is based on a children’s television programme, there is a level of expectation around an application like Pokemon Go.
Augmented Reality has created new ways for users to engage with designers artwork, which has made the world of design even more exciting than before. With the digital age beginning to embrace technologies like Augmented Reality, you can expect to see a lot more applications just like Pokemon Go in the next few months.
